Commercial AV for Gyms: How Audio, Video, Lighting, and Security Shape the Member Experience

Most gym owners do not think of themselves as opening an entertainment venue. Then the first class begins.

The instructor’s microphone has to carry over the music without becoming harsh. The playlist needs enough energy to move the room, but members still need to understand every cue. Televisions, digital displays, cameras, networking, and controls all have their own jobs to do, and all of them depend on infrastructure hidden behind the finished walls.

In a modern fitness facility, the commercial AV system affects everything from the workout experience to the way staff manages the building day-to-day.

That is especially true for boutique fitness concepts built around an immersive experience. It is also true in a traditional health club, where an aging sound system can create problems that replacing one amplifier or volume control will not solve.

The best time to make those decisions is during the design phase, before construction closes everything in. The second-best time is before another temporary repair becomes part of the permanent system.

What Does a Gym AV System Include?

A complete gym AV system may bring together commercial audio, instructor microphones, televisions or digital displays, video surveillance, networking, wireless access points, and centralized control. Lighting may also be part of the overall experience, whether it falls within our scope or is coordinated with another contractor.

A large open gym floor does not operate like a cycling studio. A yoga or Pilates room should not sound or feel like a high-intensity interval class. Reception, locker rooms, recovery areas, childcare spaces, and outdoor training zones may all require different volume levels, content, and control.

That is why we start with how each space will be used. Equipment comes later.

  • Where will instructors stand and move?
  • Which rooms need high-energy foreground music, and which need lower-level background audio?
  • Will instructors use a headset, handheld, or other microphone?
  • Do rooms operate independently or share content?
  • Where do members need to see televisions, class information, or branded content?
  • Who should be able to control audio, video, and other room functions?
  • Which entrances, equipment areas, hallways, and exterior approaches require camera coverage?
  • How might the facility expand or change after opening?

These decisions determine far more than a shopping list. They determine cable pathways, equipment-rack capacity, network requirements, speaker placement, power, mounting locations, and what staff can control once the gym is open.

The Sound System Has to Do More Than Play Loud Music

Music carries much of the energy in a gym. In a group fitness studio, it may be inseparable from the class itself. But louder is not the same as better.

A good commercial audio system provides consistent coverage. Members near one speaker should not be overwhelmed while people across the room struggle to hear. The instructor’s voice needs to remain intelligible over the music. Bass should feel purposeful without turning the rest of the building into part of the class.

That becomes difficult in fitness spaces filled with hard floors, mirrors, high ceilings, exposed structure, and other reflective surfaces. The room, speaker layout, amplification, processing, and system tuning all affect the result.

The equipment also needs to fit the application. A system designed for a home listening room is not automatically a good fit for a commercial gym that may run for long hours and serve multiple speakers across a large facility.

When a Simple Repair Isn’t Really the Solution

We recently ran into exactly that problem at a Gold’s Gym with a sound system that was roughly 15 to 20 years old. The facility was built around an audio system better suited to a residential application than the demands of a large commercial gym. 

While the request sounded simple, replace a couple of amplifiers and some volume controls, the best solution was not so straightforward. With older speakers, older wiring, and components mounted high above the floor, we could not responsibly guarantee that those replacements would solve the underlying problem.

“We can replace the amps, and we can replace the volume controls, but we can’t guarantee it’s going to work.”

The owner chose the smaller repair, spending roughly $4,000 to $5,000 instead of the approximately $15,000 to $20,000 we estimated it would take to make the system right. Within a week, the facility manager contacted us again because speakers were clipping.

Sometimes the Cheapest Fix Can Cost More in the Long Run

That is the risk with an aging system. A failing speaker, damaged wiring, or another problem elsewhere in the system can continue putting stress on the remaining equipment. Replacing the component showing the most obvious symptom may quiet the problem temporarily without solving what caused it.

We would rather explain that up front than sell a repair we cannot stand behind. In this case, the lower-cost fix became money spent on a system that still needed a larger solution.

Different Workout Zones Need Different AV

Treating the whole gym as one audio zone may be simple on paper, but it rarely reflects how the building is actually used.

On the open fitness floor, members may want energetic music at a comfortable, even level. A high-intensity studio needs more impact and clear instructor reinforcement. Yoga, Pilates, stretching, or recovery rooms may call for a completely different atmosphere. The reception staff needs to communicate with arriving members without competing with the nearest speaker.

Separate zones let each area support its purpose. They also give staff practical control without giving everyone access to the entire technical system.

In a typical setup, instructors may be able to adjust volume or content for the room they are using while system-wide settings remain restricted. The interface matters almost as much as the equipment behind it. If starting a class requires a handwritten cheat sheet, three remotes, and a call to the manager, the system is not finished.

Audio, Video, Lighting, and Control Should Support the Experience

In an experience-driven fitness studio, the environment is part of what members are buying. Music, lighting, displays, and simple controls all contribute to how the room feels and how easily staff can run it.

We recently handled the audio, networking, wireless access points, cameras, and television side of a new HYLO Fitness gym in Alpharetta. HYLO combines high-intensity training with Pilates, barre, and yoga in an immersive, music-driven concept. Lighting was a separate scope on this project and was not handled by us.

What the HYLO Fitness System Includes

The facility has two primary workout rooms: a high-intensity room and a lower-intensity room. Each has eight 12-inch full-range speakers and two 18-inch subwoofers suspended from the ceiling. The overall system is divided into three zones: the high-intensity room, the low-intensity room, and the reception/restroom area.

Seven TVs and five cameras are part of the build. Staff can use wall controllers and a touchscreen, and some day-to-day functions can be managed from a phone. The reception-area touchscreen provides control across all three zones while keeping broader system settings out of the hands of someone who only needs to run a class.

Our portion of the project, including audio, networking, access points, cameras, and seven TVs, came to approximately $75,000. The lighting portion was a separate scope.

The point is not that every gym needs a system at this scale. HYLO is a specialized concept where the environment itself is central to the member experience. A 24-hour neighborhood gym, a cycling studio, and an immersive multi-room fitness concept should not receive the same design. The system should follow the business model.

Televisions and Digital Displays Need a Clear Job

Screens in a gym can serve several purposes. Televisions may provide entertainment in cardio areas. Displays may show class schedules, membership offers, instructor information, welcome messages, branded video, upcoming events, or workout content.

Placement should follow the member’s sightline and the purpose of the content. A television mounted simply because there was an empty wall may be difficult to see from the equipment it was meant to serve.

The way content gets to those screens matters too. At HYLO, we are using individual Apple TVs behind the displays so staff can choose content screen by screen over a wired or wireless connection. For a smaller number of televisions, that can be a practical approach.

Centralized video distribution makes more sense as the facility and screen count grow. In a larger gym where the same sources need to reach many displays, managing each television independently can become cumbersome.

Either way, the displays, network, content sources, and staff controls need to be planned together.

Security Cameras Should Be Planned Around Real Risk

Gym surveillance is not just about putting a camera in each corner. Owners need useful coverage where incidents are most likely to matter.

In a gym, that often means the workout floor in case of an injury, entrances and exits, the main hallway, reception, and areas such as member cubbies. Cameras do not belong in restrooms or other spaces where members reasonably expect privacy.

Exterior coverage depends on the building. A standalone facility with its own parking lot may benefit from exterior cameras. A gym inside a shared shopping center may have a different need.

Planning cameras early also makes the physical installation cleaner. Cable can remain concealed, mounting locations can be coordinated with the architecture, and the recorder, network equipment, and backup power can be given an appropriate home.

Prewire the Gym Before the Walls Close

The most expensive cable is often the one the owner decides to add after construction.

HYLO gave us a very clear example. By the time we became involved, the walls were already double-sheetrocked and heavily insulated for soundproofing, and the ceilings were roughly 18 to 20 feet high. We had to cut back into finished walls, come down from the ceiling, and coordinate specific access windows with the contractor before the flooring went in.

What probably could have been a one-day prewire took about four days. We estimate the prewire cost at least 50% more because the low-voltage infrastructure was considered too late.

When Should AV Prewiring Happen?

The better time to involve us is during design. Low-voltage planning should happen alongside decisions about flooring, wall finishes, HVAC, electrical, and lighting. Once construction begins, our preferred prewire window is after the electrician, HVAC contractor, and plumber have completed their rough-in work but before insulation and sheetrock go in.

That does not mean installing every speaker, screen, or camera an owner might someday want. It means preserving reasonable options while pathways are accessible.

What Should You Prewire for in a Gym?

Future planning may include spare conduit, additional network cabling, rack capacity, power, or planned locations for displays, speakers, cameras, wireless access points, and controls.

HYLO’s Alpharetta location is expected to be the first of several similar Atlanta-area builds. The first project has already reinforced an important lesson for the next one: low voltage belongs in the design conversation, not on the punch list.

The Wiring Route Matters, Too

Planning early is only part of the equation. The type of cable, where it runs, and what happens around it during construction all matter.

That is especially important with commercial networking and AV systems, where televisions, wireless access points, cameras, control systems, and other connected equipment all depend on the infrastructure behind the walls. We route low-voltage wiring carefully around power and other building systems, use the appropriate cable for the application, and label and test everything before installation is complete.

We also try to come in after the other major trades have completed their rough-in work. That reduces the chance that another contractor opens a wall later and accidentally cuts or damages cable that has already been installed.

Good wiring is invisible when everything works. When it is poorly planned, damaged, or undocumented, it can become one of the hardest parts of an AV or networking system to troubleshoot later.

Networking and Wi-Fi Are Part of the Gym Experience

Modern gyms depend on the network for much more than member Wi-Fi. Streaming devices, televisions, cameras, staff systems, wireless access points, and other connected equipment all rely on dependable coverage.

Building materials can complicate that. Metal construction, concrete, and metal mesh in some wall systems can degrade wireless signals. Access-point placement is critical: too little overlap leaves dead zones, while too much can create its own connectivity problems as devices try to decide which access point to use.

We plan coverage so the access points overlap appropriately and members and staff can move through the facility without losing a dependable connection.

The Equipment Rack Is Part of the System

Every speaker, display, camera, control device, and network connection eventually leads somewhere. That central equipment location, often called the head-end, needs to be planned as deliberately as anything members can see.

The rack should be sized for the system, organized and labeled, ventilated appropriately, supplied with the necessary power, and left with reasonable room for service and future additions.

For a gym, access also matters. The rack should not be placed where members can reach it, where staff routinely stack supplies against it, or where heat and dust are ignored. Service technicians need enough space to diagnose and replace equipment without disrupting the entire facility.

A clean rack is not about making a hidden room look impressive. It is about giving the business a system that can be operated, maintained, and changed.

When to Repair an Existing Gym Sound System and When to Start Over

Nobody wants to hear that an old system may need replacement when the visible problem appears to be one amplifier or one silent speaker. Sometimes a targeted repair is the right answer. Sometimes it only postpones the same conversation.

The decision depends on what we can verify. Is the wiring documented and accessible? Are the speakers compatible and still functioning? Was the original system designed for commercial use? Will repairing one component leave the owner with a dependable system, or merely restore sound until the next weak point fails?

The Gold’s Gym project is why we are cautious about working on older systems when we cannot verify the condition of the whole system. We can assess what is there, but we will not promise a lasting result when the remaining equipment and wiring make that promise impossible.

Sometimes the larger recommendation costs more today. It may also keep the owner from paying twice.

Plan the Experience Before You Buy the Equipment

The best gym AV systems begin with the experience the owner wants members and staff to have.

What should a high-intensity class feel like? Where does an instructor need to be heard? Which screens help members, and what should they show? How should different rooms operate at the same time? What will staff control every day? Which parts of the facility need camera coverage? Where does the network need to perform? What might the business add at its next location, or in this one two years from now?

Once those answers are clear, we can select the speakers, displays, amplifiers, cameras, cabling, networking, and controls that actually fit the job.
